Happy Wednesday, Friends!
My kids went back to school this week so we are spending a lot of time working on remembering things like homework and bedtime routines after a fun summer of lots of adventure. Anyone else?! While my kids and I were working on those things, I got to thinking about how as creatives we spend a lot of time documenting celebrations, achievements, vacations, and the "fun" part of life but that we sometimes shy away from documenting the tough stories. These tough stories, however, are an essential part of our journey.
My friend, Sara Scraps, decided to launch a series this month called "Documenting the Tough Stuff" and I knew that this was a perfect incentive to get me documenting some of those rough stories. Today, I created a layout using the new Road Trip collection mixed with the Just Because paper pack as a way to document Fear and the role that it has played with me and my kids.
One of my favorite ways to document the tough stories is to include hidden journaling. The large black piece that runs under my photo is an envelope where I typed up my journaling (written as a letter to fear itself) and included several stories of my own fear (flying--hence the picture) as well as how my son and I have worked together to learn how to conquer fear. Because these are more private and personal stories, I love the idea of including them in hidden journaling so you don't automatically read them when just flipping thru my album.
Another of my biggest tips for documenting the tough stories is to use a more somber and cool color palette. Bright, fun colors would create an inconsistent message across this layout but using a darker and more subtle color palette mimics the mood of the topic as well as the journaling and creates much more consistency.
Today, I encourage you to think about some of the harder stories to document. What tough situations or memories deserve real estate in your album? I believe that it is important to show a balanced life in our albums. I want my kids to be able to acknowledge the struggles as a part of our journey and I encourage (and challenge) you to tell those stories as well.
I talk more about my process and thoughts on documenting the tough stuff on my channel today as well:
